Travel Score

Better than "how many countries have you visited?"

How it Works

Core Philosophy

Most travel trackers simply ask, "How many countries have you been to?" This treats a 3-hour airport layover the same as living in a country for five years. The Travel Score Engine calculates a definitive ranking based on the depth, duration, and diversity of your visits.

1. The Global Score Formula

Your total travel score is the sum of all individual country scores, plus a bonus multiplier for subregional geographical diversity:

Global Score = ∑ (Country Scores) + (Subregions Visited × 10)

Subregion Diversity Bonus: For every unique subregion you visit (e.g. Western Europe, Eastern Asia, Northern Africa), you receive a flat +10 points. This encourages exploring new regions of the world rather than focusing travel in a single area.

2. Country Scoring Tiers

Each country visit is categorized into one of four tiers, reflecting the style and duration of your stay:

Transit

Airport Layovers or Direct Transit

Layovers, changing trains, or driving straight through without stopping.

Score = 1.0 pt
Drive-Thru

Short Stays & Road Trips

Passing through, eating a meal, or staying less than a full day. The score scales based on the hours spent:

Score = 2.0 × Multiplierhours
• Hours < 4: Multiplier = 0.5 (1.0 pt)
• Hours 4 to 8: Multiplier = 1.0 (2.0 pts)
• Hours > 8: Multiplier = 1.5 (3.0 pts)
Visit

Multi-Day Visit

Staying at least one night, exploring cities, and traveling. Points scale logarithmically with time, scope, and repeat loyalty:

Score = (Base × Mduration × Mcities) + Bonusreturn
Base Score:
  • 10.0 pts for Independent Sovereign Nations.
  • 5.0 pts for Dependent Territories or Colonies.
Mduration (Time Multiplier):
• 1 Day: 1.0x
• 2-3 Days: 1.1x
• 4-7 Days: 1.2x
• 8-14 Days: 1.3x
• 15-30 Days: 1.4x
• > 30 Days: 1.5x
Mcities (Scope Multiplier):
• 1 City: 1.0x
• 2-3 Cities: 1.2x
• 4-5 Cities: 1.3x
• > 5 Cities: 1.4x
Bonusreturn (Return Loyalty):

+2.0 pts for every return trip after your first trip: (Trips - 1) × 2.0.

Lived There

Expat or Resident Stay

Having lived in the country (e.g. for work, study, or relocation). This awards a flat high score:

Score = 15.0 pts (Independent Nation)
Score = 7.5 pts (Dependent Territory)

Design Rationale

Why is a flat "Lived there" score less than the maximum proper visit?

Living in a country is a profound, immersive experience that represents long-term integration and cultural depth. To reflect this unique connection without forcing residents to track transient tourist metrics like repeat trips or individual city counts, we award a flat, premium score of 15.0 points. This positions residency at a high, established tier equivalent to an extended and active multi-city visit.

Sovereign Nations vs. Territories

Sovereign states represent distinct political, historical, and cultural systems, whereas territories remain politically associated with sovereign states. To respect this difference, independent nations receive double the base scores (10.0 vs 5.0) of territories.

Why a Return Trip Bonus?

Returning to a country shows a deeper interest and connection than a single vacation. The +2.0 pts loyalty bonus rewards you for returning to and rebuilding connections with countries you love.

Hypothetical Maximum & The Infinite Score

If you were to complete a maximum "Proper Visit" (staying over 30 days and exploring 5+ cities) in all 250 sovereign countries and territories across all 23 subregions, your score would be approximately ~4,900 points.

However, the score is not finite. Because the return loyalty bonus is unbounded (adding +2.0 points for every subsequent trip), your travel score has no theoretical upper limit. This mathematically models the philosophy that travel, cultural exploration, and returning to the places you love is a lifelong, infinite journey.
